CIMED Research Day and Joseph “Bo” Koster
Memorial Lecture and Reception June 12th, 2012

Thanks to all participants in the CIMED Research Day held in conjunction with
the Koster Memorial Lecture and Reception, on the afternoon of June 12th in the
Farrell Learning and Teaching Center.

More than 35 posters were presented on topics from fundamental ion channel
biochemistry and biophysics to excitability diseases in humans. The poster
session ran from 2:00-4:00 in the FLTC Atrium space and was followed by the
3rd Annual Koster Memorial Lecture (“Genetic Insights into Regulation of
Electrolyte Flux and Human Hypertension”) in Connor auditorium, presented
by Dr. Rick Lifton from Yale University.

The posters were judged by Drs. Nerbonne, Hruz, Blumer and Lingle, and three
prizes of $100 each were presented to the best poster in each of three
categories:

  •  Pre-Doctoral: Jacob I. Laughner – “Optical Mapping of Cardiac Surface

Mechanics with Structured Light Imaging”

  •  Post-Doctoral: Vivian Gonzalez-Perez – “Stereospecific binding of a

disordered peptide segment mediates BK channel inactivation”

  •  Translational: Maria Sara Remedi – “Reversal of Secondary ?-cell

Failure-Glucotoxicity in Neonatal Diabetes: Implications for Type-2 Diabetes”

Many thanks to all who contributed posters, and congratulations to the
three winners!
